The Fyt Continues: 5 Top Stories That Defined 2025

December 31, 2025

If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that the battle for a better Philippines is fought on multiple fronts. From the storm-battered slopes of the Sierra Madre to the noise of the streets at the height of the anti-corruption protests, this year demanded resilience and action.

As we close the chapter on 2025, we look back at five stories where we held the line, spoke truth to power, and championed the Filipino spirit.

Here are our editor’s picks for 2025.

1. The Green Shield: Why We Must Save Sierra Madre

The Sierra Madre Effect Explainer

When Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) and Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) battered the country, the conversation inevitably turned to our first line of defense. Fyt and LyfSaver produced a definitive explainer on the Sierra Madre mountain range.

We moved beyond the scenic postcards to explain the hard science: How this mountain range physically weakens typhoons, acts as a massive water reservoir to regulate flooding, and serves as a critical biodiversity corridor for endemic species.

We highlighted how disruptive human activities like deforestation and quarrying are chipping away at our shield. Protecting the Sierra Madre, after all, is an act of national survival.

2. We Can’t Stop Storms, But We Can Prevent Disasters

We Can't Stop Storms, But We Can Prevent Disasters Explainer

Disasters are not natural; hazards are. Refusing to accept the narrative of "resilience" without accountability, we revisited the hard-learned lessons from 2013's Super Typhoon Yolanda to better prepare ourselves and our communities against strong forces of nature.

We argued that the difference between a hazard and a disaster is preparation.

We championed science-based solutions, emphasizing that:

  • Science saves lives: We must use probabilistic hazard maps like Project NOAH.
  • Communication is vital: Warnings must be understood, not just issued.
  • Location matters: Evacuation sites must never be located in flood or surge zones.
  • Collaboration is key: Scientists, LGUs, and communities must work as one unit before the rain falls.

3. Game of Thrones: PH Edition

Game of Thrones Cavite

While the midterm elections dominated the headlines, Fyt looked past the candidates to see the machinery behind them. In our viral series "Game of Thrones, Philippines Edition," we mapped the "houses" that have held the political iron throne in their provinces for decades.

In it, we analyzed power consolidation within families that became political fixtures over the years. From the Dys in Isabela and the Valeras in Abra, to the Javiers and Legardas in Antique, we visualized how political dynasties continue to shape local governance.

It was a stark reminder that in many parts of the country, politics is still a family business.

4. I-Tsek Mo! (Fact Forward)

I-Tsek Mo Video

The 2025 midterm elections saw a tidal wave of disinformation, but the Fyt team stood as a breakwater. Over a span of four intense months, we released 20 fact-check videos under our I-Tsek Mo! banner.

Many of these fact checks went viral, proving that in an age of algorithms and fake news, the truth still has a fighting chance if delivered with clarity, creativity, and speed.

5. Nationwide Anti-Corruption Protests

September 21 Protest Explainer

On September 21, the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, the country went beyond merely remembering the past; it raged against the present. Fyt was on the ground to cover the massive nationwide protests triggered by the exposure of widespread corruption in government flood control projects.

As floodwaters rose due to corruption, the floodgates of public indignation burst open.

What we witnessed:

  • From Luneta to EDSA, we documented the sea of protesters.
  • Universities staging walkouts, celebrities joining the march, and transport groups offering free jeepney rides to participants.
  • We saw firsthand how widespread corruption became a rallying cry for good governance, shaking the administration to its core.

As we enter 2026, the challenges remain, but so does our resolve. Whether it is holding power to account, debunking lies, or advocating for the environment, we promise to keep fighting the good Fyt. - fyt.ph
