A mudslide struck Sitio Acupan, displacing 19 families and damaging a key hanging bridge.
This isn’t over — unstable weather and saturated slopes may trigger more hazards. Protecting lives and restoring safe access must remain a priority.
ITOGON, Benguet – A large-scale mudslide struck the Acupan community in Barangay Virac, Itogon town, Benguet on Friday, July 4, as continuous heavy rains continue to batter the province. Local officials have since launched clearing operations while closely monitoring the area for further threats.
According to reports, the relentless downpour that began last month has triggered a series of hazardous events, including landslides and river overflows in the area. In Sitio Acupan, a wide swath of land collapsed, sending mud and large rocks rushing down the slopes of nearby mountains. A viral video circulating online shows the dramatic descent of debris from the mountainside, highlighting the scale of destruction even severely damaging a hanging bridge which now poses a threat to nearby households.
According to a post by Itogon MDRRMO, a total of 19 households have been evacuated. Responders encountered difficulties reaching the area due to its remote location and distance from the main road.
Clearing operations are now underway in Acupan. Meanwhile, Itogon Mayor Bernard Waclin, who led the clearing operations along with the MDRRMO, has urged those living in landslide-prone areas to conduct preemptive evacuations to prevent further injuries or loss of life.
The recent mudslide, which originated from Sitio Camp 3 in Acupan, left the area covered in a thick layer of mud and rocks, making roads and pathways impassable. The destruction of vital infrastructure like the hanging bridge has further complicated rescue and relief efforts.
According to PAGASA, as of 2 PM on July 4, 2025, Tropical Depression "Bising" has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). However, it remains under close monitoring, as it may re-enter PAR by the morning of Sunday, July 6, and exit again through its northern boundary by Monday. It is also forecasted to intensify into a tropical storm by July 5, 2025 and may further strengthen as it moves over the sea south of Taiwan.
Local disaster officials are on high alert as the weather remains unstable. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and heed warnings from authorities as the situation continues to evolve.
